Our story

We started 30 years ago as a place to sleep for free spirits, young world travellers and creatives. Always have been located in Amsterdam and always have been part of the city we call home. In the meantime, we became a little more mature. And although we have largely lost our wild hair, we have always managed to retain our local and international heart for culture. We like to celebrate this with everyone - whether you are a tourist, a local or a business traveller.

Our history

With its heart in the city and its face to the green, our iconic, monumental building watches over the Oosterpark. It has done so since 1886, when it was a hospice for disabled and incurably ill girls. After 1945, it became a nursing home for the elderly, and from 1982 a 'sleep-in' to accommodate the masses of Dam-sleepers that the City of Amsterdam couldn't cope with. In 1992, we took over the building from the municipality. We renamed it Arena - international centre for youth culture and tourism. Ten years later, now known as Hotel Arena, welcomed world stars such as Alicia Keys, Norah Jones and Oasis. In 2017, after a major renovation, we expanded to the place it is today. From a sleep-inn to a fully-fledged four-star Design Hotel™. Who could have ever imagined that?
